There are many things which happen in school libraries which are not quite “proper” and which would probably offend some people. Many teacher-librarians develop house rules to accomodate their own local situations and here is one that we have adopted.

We have had a name change. No longer are we the Library. We are now the Resource Centre. This should reflect our purpose within the school, providing a range of resources for students and staff, not just library books.
This begs the question, though, what’s in a name?
Does it really matter what the place is called? [...]

Today, I was at an ICT conference in Maryborough but one of the highlights was listening to Sean Tierney discuss his current project/role in EQ, ie working with schools to develop elearning spaces in schools. One of his focus areas in the seminar was libraries, though, and it was totally inspiring.

The challenges of finding room for things and promoting certain resources continues. A reorganisation of the newspapers and magazine area was the start and yesterday I moved the Big Books and changed the storage options for the mags.
